Sipnosis
1968 was the year that changed the world. And for four young Aboriginal sisters from a remote mission this is the year that would change their lives forever. Around the globe, there was protest and revolution in the streets. Indigenous Australians finally secured the right to vote. There were drugs and the shock of a brutal assassination. And there was Vietnam. The sisters, Cynthia, Gail, Julie and Kay are discovered by Dave, a talent scout with a kind heart, very little rhythm but a great knowledge of soul music. Billed as Australia's answer to 'The Supremes', Dave secures the sisters their first true gig, and flies them to Vietnam to sing for the American troops. Based on a true story, THE SAPPHIRES is a triumphant celebration of youthful emotion, family and music. |

The couple struggles with their discomfort, as they search for some way to communicate. It is clear that they are meeting for the first time, and need to deal with the traditional rules of courtship, however truncated. In general, the man is given the role of pursuer, and the woman is expected to be somewhat reserved. Do these rules still apply at a spouse-swapping party? Can a woman avoid being condemned for agreeing to participate in such an event, or even worse, enjoying the encounter? These are the challenges that each character faces, seeking to establish some context to allow them to proceed to the expected sexual encounter. It is as though the ending were already written, and the couple is trying to fill in the preliminaries, so the ending might be justified. Chris Anderson's sensitive piano score provides the perfect background for the scene. |
