Sipnosis Sócrates (Cantinflas) un abnegado maestro que ha consagrado su vida a la enseñanza, sacrifica la comodidad de la gran ciudad para marchar hacia el pueblo del Romeral, donde son necesarios sus servicios. Allí deberá luchar contra el poderoso cacique local, interesado en formentar la ignorancia de sus habitantes. Sócrates cuenta con el apoyo del sacerdote del pueblo y de Hortensia, una joven que acepta alquilarle una habitación en su casa.
